Tell us a bit about you and your business.
My name is Gemma and I’m the Founder of That’s Her Business. I’m a graphic designer by profession and specialise in brand identity, logo design and web design.
I began my career in the design industry 7 years ago as a Junior Graphic Designer and worked my way up to Studio Team Leader before founding my own business in 2018.
When I was self-employed, I struggled with a few things like being on my own and meeting other people. When I moved into a co working space, out of 30 businesses, I was one of two women.
So, I created That’s Her Business. We’re a collective of freelancers and as a group, we offer women a whole start up package, from web design and logo design to training.
Uniquely though, we’ve created a support network of talented women who not only enjoy each other’s company but empower one another.
What’s your biggest business achievement so far?
In April 2020, I completed a crowdfunding campaign that yielded £4,362. This is a massive achievement for me because I did it all myself mid-lockdown.
But, what was even better was that because I did it so well, I actually won a £5,000 grant on top of that. This allowed me to give away a tonne of packages for women in business, all free of charge.
It also meant that freelancers could work during lockdown and women in business who needed our help got it free of charge.
How was Rocket Lawyer able to help you?
Rocket Lawyer helped me with a few things.
I needed contracts for working with clients and working with other freelancers (we being a freelance collective). I also need documents when designing customer websites eg Website terms and conditions or Privacy policies. I always recommend Rocket Lawyer to my clients for these resources.
I also employed an intern for a while during COVID-19 so I created a range of policies and contracts to help me with that.
What I find really useful is that the website is easy to navigate. You can search, find the document you need and go through a questionnaire which is easy to enter your information in. I’ve often found contracts and terms to be overwhelming but Rocket Lawyer’s questionnaire lets you understand how your business fits in within the contract.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned since you’ve started your own business?
I’ve learnt it’s really important to have good people around you to delegate, bounce ideas off and to as a support network. It’s hard to run a business on your own and if you are on your own, make sure you have people such as fellow owners, family or friends to help you out and talk to.
What are your plans for the future?
We’ve got a range of ideas for the future!
We’re working on an online shop that will house brand identity resources eg social media templates and document templates that people can drop their own content into.
We’re also expanding the collective and hoping to work with copywriters and designers to boost our service offerings. Online courses is another thing we’d like to get off the ground too.
