What is a Motorcycle Bill of Sale?
A Motorcycle Bill of Sale is a legal document that records the transfer of ownership of a motorcycle from a Seller to a Buyer. Motorcycle Bills of Sale are used as an official receipt that signifies there has been a change of ownership for the specified motorcycle.
Commonly, a Motorcycle Bill of Sale is also used to provide proof of ownership when obtaining the title of the motorcycle from the state and as a reference for any tax that may be owed to state or county authorities.
This Motorcycle Bill of Sale template should be signed by both the buyer and seller, and will become effective as of the date specified. The buyer should also sign immediately below the odometer statement in the Motorcycle Bill of Sale. The buyer should also make sure to obtain appropriate licenses, permits, and insurance coverage for the motorcycle.

How to write a Motorcycle Bill of Sale
When selling a motorcycle, there are a few things that you need to include to make a comprehensive Bill of Sale for a Motorcycle. Some of these things include:
Names and Addresses:
The full names and addresses of both the seller (the current owner) and the buyer (the new owner).
Warranty Information:
A seller can include limited warranties. By including limited warranties, a Seller guarantees that he or she is the owner of the motorcycle and has the right to transfer ownership of the motorcycle to the Buyer. The Seller also guarantees that the motorcycle is free and clear of any liens and is in "good working condition." Without a warranty, the motorcycle is considered to be sold "as is," which basically means "what you see is what you get."
Odometer Statement
Federal law requires a statement by the seller of the odometer mileage at the time selling. In many states the odometer statement is included as part of the certificate of title. The buyer is required to acknowledge the odometer statement by signing the Motorcycle Bill of Sale immediately below the odometer statement.
Date of Sale
The date when the sale occurred.
Price
The price is the full amount of money that both the buyer and seller have agreed upon, including any down payment that may have already been paid. Additionally, the price may or may not include applicable sales tax. You will have the option to specify whether or not sales tax will be included in the total price. The amount of sales tax is different in each state. Make sure to check your local laws to determine the amount of sales tax that will apply to your transaction and whether or not to include that price in the total price.
Motorcycle Details
Information about the motorcycle being sold, including the make, model, and any relevant serial numbers.
The Motorcycle’s VIN
The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a unique number assigned to each vehicle. Commonly, the VIN of a motorcycle can be found on the upper portion of the frame.

The Motorcycle Bill of Sale document should be signed by both parties. The buyer should sign in the odometer section, and both the buyer and the seller should sign at the end of the document.
-
The Motorcycle Bill of Sale only represents the transfer of the RIGHT to ownership of the motorcycle; the motorcycle's Certificate of Title reflects ACTUAL ownership. Therefore, both the Motorcycle Bill of Sale and the Certificate of Title are needed to complete the transfer of the motorcycle.
-
The original copy of the Motorcycle Bill of Sale should be given to the buyer. The seller should retain a copy.
-
The buyer should obtain all appropriate licenses, permits and insurance coverage for the motorcycle as required by that state.

Motorcycle Bill of Sale FAQs
-
Can this Motorcycle Bill of Sale be used for scooters, mopeds, and dirt bikes?
Although we call it a Motorcycle Bill of Sale, this document may be used for many two-wheeled motorized vehicles.
-
Can I still buy or sell a motorcycle if it doesn’t have an odometer?
Federal regulations require sellers to provide buyers with an odometer disclosure if the vehicle is newer than 2010. If the motorcycle is a model year 2010 or older, this requirement may not apply to its sale. If the motorcycle is a model year 2011 or newer, this federal requirement may prohibit the sale of the motorcycle without an odometer.
-
Can I use this Bill of Sale to buy a motorcycle engine?
The Motorcycle Bill of Sale is specifically designed for the sale and purchase of a full motorcycle, not motorcycle parts. Because of the mandatory odometer reading that a Motorcycle Bill of Sale requires, a general Bill of Sale document would be better to use in the case of selling or buying a motorcycle engine.
-
Who signs a Bill of Sale and is notarization required?
Both the buyer and seller of the motorcycle need to sign the Motorcycle Bill of Sale. Depending on local regulations, this Motorcycle Bill of Sale may need additional signatures from witnesses or may require notarization. Your local DMV will have more details as to if and when witnesses and notarization is required.
Additionally, buyers and sellers may want to notarize a Motorcycle Bill of Sale for insurance purposes, or for high-value or high-risk sales. Consult your insurance provider and a lawyer if you are concerned about a high-value or high-risk motorcycle sale.
-
At what point do I give the Motorcycle Bill of Sale to the Buyer?
You should typically provide the Motorcycle Bill of Sale to the buyer at the time of the sale, right when the transaction occurs. After the Motorcycle Bill of Sale is signed by both parties, legal ownership of the motorcycle is transferred, as of the date provided in the document, regardless of which party has possession of the motorcycle. The original copy of the Motorcycle Bill of Sale is then given to the buyer. The seller should retain a copy.
-
Is a Motorcycle Bill of Sale the same as a receipt?
A Motorcycle Bill of Sale is like a receipt, but is more comprehensive in some ways, providing a more detailed record of the motorcycle itself, along with the sale and transfer of ownership. Courts sometimes interpret a Motorcycle Bill of Sale as more of a receipt for the property sale than a binding contract. To ensure that the Motorcycle Bill of Sale can be enforced in a court of law, you may want to include enough specific language in the Motorcycle Bill of Sale to ensure its legal enforceability.
